The Washakie County Conservation District's Tree Program enables farmers, ranchers, and other landowners to obtain trees at nominal cost.  The purpose of the program is to encourage the owners to plant effective windbreaks to protect building, cropland and feedlots and for erosion control, reforestations, Christmas tree plantings and other conservation practices.

While this program is designed primarily for windbreak plantings, the seedlings have other uses as well. We have a good selection of fruit bearing shrubs if you are interested in edible fruits for yourself or for wildlife.  There are several species of trees and shrubs that can be used to add color in the springs or fall.  Evergreen and tall shrubs can be used for noise or visual barriers, or combine several species and designs to create a functional windbreak, provide habitat for wildlife, and provide color and beauty to your property. (See Tree Application Form)

Whether you have many acres of open space to plant in, or just a few square yards, you can usually find a spot to plant something.  The important thing is that you plant the right tree in the right place.  Look above you for overhead power lines, check underground for buried utilities, and know the local ordinances regarding planting along streets and sidewalks.  Think of how big the tree will be in twenty years, not how big it is when you plant it.  A six-inch seedling may grow to heights of 20 to 30 feet or more when mature.

The District can also assist you with your planting plan and water delivery system.

TREE AND SHRUB GUIDE FOR WASHAKIE COUNTY

The WCCD received a grant from Wyoming State Forestry Division to develop a tree brochure which focuses on local tree and shrub species information and selection.  The brochure also includes planting tips, pruning tips, watering, and fertilization information.  We received assistance from the Worland Tree Board, Worland Garden Club, Washakie County Cooperative Extension Service Office, Natural Resource Conservation Service and Wyoming State Forestry with proofreading, locating species to photograph, species identification and technical information included in the brochure. (Tree Brochure)  Another brochure available for download is from Colorado State Forest Service; "Trees for Conservation a buyer's guide".  This guide focuses on most trees that are available through the Washakie County Conservation District.
