The Washakie County Conservation District is working hard to improve the quality of our natural resources along with our quality of life. Since voters approved a 1 mill levy in 2002, to support the conservation district, local tax dollars have been used to support water quality assessment and monitoring efforts, keep local people updated on land management issues, support the conservation education program, provide workshops on habitat enhancement and innovative irrigation water management practices, provide seedling trees for conservation purposes, provide land ownership maps, provide education and information on recycling, conduct tours highlighting conservation practices, help coordinate the household waste collection day and much more.
The continue to meet the needs of our community and remain accountable, the board of supervisors asked the local people for help in updating the District's natural resource plan. This plan, developed with the community, will enable local people to make decisions concerning the improvement of the natural resources in the area.
In 2000, the District hired Tim
Morrison, Holistic Resource Management Educator, to help them
conduct the meetings and personal interviews. Tim acted as facilitator to help
the participants outline concerns and goals for the area. The group was asked to
focus on three areas to determine "community holistic goals."
The three areas were: quality of life (shared values, the things that make
life in the basin unique), forms of production (things we have or need, to
produce or retain the quality of life we want to have or maintain), and future
resource base (the people, land and community , services available and what is
needed to sustain and enhance the quality of life and forms of production.)
The WCCD Board has amended this plan to update it to current
activities and programs.
