Platte County Resource District Windbreak Cost-Share Program

General Program Objectives

The Windbreak Cost-Share program was developed by the Platte County Resource District to help landowners in Platte County with the cost of installing a well designed and quality windbreak.  PCRD has developed a set of guidelines and requirements for cooperators to follow in order to be eligible for cost-share assistance.

Goals

  • Help maintain energy savings

  • Help provide cooperators the opportunity to implement good stewardship practices

  • Improve wildlife habitat

  • Improve livestock protection

  • Recreation

Project Requirements

    1. Landowner must own a minimum of 2 acres where planting is to be established. All projects must encompass at least .55 acres of protected area (10 x HxL)/43560’.

    2. All plantings must be installed in a feasible location to meet conservation objectives with a minimum of 3 rows 400’ long.

    3. All planting sites must be prepared prior to planting season.

    4. Livestock must be excluded from planting site after completion.

    5. All leeward rows (inside rows) must be at least 100’ from any building. It also needs to be located a safe distance (85’) from driveways and roads to avoid excessive snow accumulation.  Windbreaks planted near and parallel to public roads will be at least 200’ from the centerline of the road to the leeward side.

    6. It is the landowner’s responsibility to make sure there are no overhead or underground utilities and to contact utility companies to have the area marked prior to ground preparation.

    7. The District will cost-share on site prep, seedling trees, weed barrier, tree protectors, irrigation system materials and installation costs.

    8. Weed barrier must be used in all cost-share windbreaks.

Funding

The Windbreak Cost-Share program is a matching program of 50% of the total project cost not to exceed $1,000.00.  All projects are pre-approved by the District Board of Supervisors and all projects are required to meet PCRD/NRCS technical standards and specifications.
