Grazing Workshop scheduled for October
Dr. Roy Roath, of the
Forest, Range, and Watershed Stewardship Department at Colorado State
University will be conducting a workshop at the First State Bank
Conference Room on October 14th starting at 8:00 a.m. The workshop is an
educational opportunity for livestock producers to learn how to develop
prescribed grazing plans for their own operations and to then be able to
effectively monitor and assess the effectiveness of their grazing system
from year to year. Dr. Roath recently developed the Grazing Response
Index which is an efficient and effective method for landowners to gauge
their grazing plan. Dr. Roath, and the other grazing specialists that
will be attending the workshop, intend to provide an interactive, hands
on experience to participants so they can learn to develop their own
grazing plan. The presenters will demonstrate and describe the
importance and sustainability of livestock grazing to the environment. A
well defined and implemented grazing plan will yield sustainable and
profitable results that will provide long-term and progressive benefits
to natural resources, wildlife, soils, and water quality. This workshop
is a pro active approach to putting knowledge and tools into the hands
of those whom desire to implement science based grazing techniques for
their operations. Some of the topics to be discussed include:
· Developing
realistic goals and objectives for the ranch
· Why build a grazing plan? Why
monitor?
· Building a grazing plan
· Monitoring/Record Keeping
· Drought management plan
· Use of a grazing plan for carbon
credit trading
The workshop is hosted
by the Wyoming Game & Fish Department, the Platte County Resource
District, the Wheatland NRCS Office, Southeastern WY RC&D, and UW
Cooperative Extension Service through grant funds received from Wyoming
Private Grazing Lands Team Educational Grant. In order to best utilize
the information from the workshop, maps with important soils information
of each landowners’ properties will be provided. Interested landowners
need to RSVP as soon as possible to allow time for the maps to be
produced. Please call 322-9060 to schedule a time for your map to be
made.
